The Roadside Survival Kit Every Classic Motorcycle Rider Must Carry
Modern roadside recovery won't fix a blown condenser or loose throttle cable fifty miles from nowhere. Here is what is in my weathered leather roll.
The Roadside Survival Kit Every Classic Motorcycle Rider Must Carry
When you ride a modern fuel-injected motorcycle equipped with CAN-bus electronics and computer diagnostics, carrying tools is largely symbolic. If something breaks, your only real tool is your cell phone and an AAA card.
With classic motorcycles, the contract is completely different.
A vintage motorcycle rarely suffers from unfixable catastrophic failure on the road. Instead, it encounters loose vibration gremlins, fouled plugs, slipped throttle cables, or a blown fuse. Almost every roadside issue can be sorted out in twenty minutes on the shoulder—if you have the right tools and supplies in your kit.
Here is the exact contents of my canvas tool roll that has accompanied me on thousands of vintage miles.
1. Hand Tools Tailored to Your Bike's Heritage
Never carry a generic 100-piece socket set. Pack only the exact sizes your specific machine uses:
- Japanese Classics (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki):
- JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) Screwdrivers: Crucial! Do not use standard Phillips screwdrivers on Japanese engine case screws; Phillips is designed to cam-out and will chew soft Japanese cross-head fasteners into rounded soup.
- 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm combination wrenches.
- Compact 3/8" ratchet with 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 17mm sockets.
- Dedicated thin-wall spark plug socket.
- British Classics (Triumph, Norton, BSA):
- Whitworth / BSF wrenches (or AF sizes for post-1970 models).
- German Classics (BMW):
- Quality metric Allen hex keys (especially 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm).
- Valve adjusting 10mm and 12mm thin spanners with feeler gauges (0.10mm and 0.15mm).
2. Electrical Triage Gear
Ninety percent of sudden roadside shutdowns are electrical:
- 12V Test Light: A simple bulb with an alligator clip allows you to test for power at the coil, points, and fuse box in thirty seconds without batteries.
- Spare Spark Plugs & Brass Wire Brush: Pre-gapped and stored in protective screw-top plastic tubes.
- Coil of 16-Gauge Copper Wire (6 feet): Can bypass a melted ignition switch, broken tail light wire, or blown fuse link.
- Spare Glass Fuses: Keep 3x of each rating your fuse box takes.
- Quality Electrical Tape (3M Super 33+): Cheap vinyl tape turns into greasy slime under engine heat; use the good stuff.
3. The Unsung Mechanical Life-Savers
Beyond wrenches, these five items have rescued more road trips than anything else:
1. Safety Wire (0.032" Stainless Steel):
Can hold a cracked exhaust bracket, secure a loose footpeg, or brace a luggage rack.
2. Quick-Setting Epoxy Putty (J-B Weld WaterWeld):
Can seal a cracked engine case or punctured oil pan on the spot. Cures rock-hard in 20 min.
3. Spare Master Link for Drive Chain:
Sized to match your chain (520, 530, or 630) with spare clip.
4. Universal Throttle/Clutch Cable Repair Kit:
A length of universal inner cable with screw-on solderless brass nipples.
5. 3 Feet of Fuel Line & Inline Filter:
Can siphon gas from a friend's tank or replace a perished fuel feed.
Pack this kit under your seat or roll it tightly onto your front fork legs, and you will ride with the quiet confidence that whatever the road dishes out, you have the means to ride home.
